The University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center’s Healthcare Experience in Research & Oncology Program introduces Michigan high school students to the wide range of careers involved in cancer care, cancer research, and oncology-related fields. This virtual, introductory program provides hands-on exposure to genetic drosophila research through a partnership with eCLOSE institute and a patient case study project, to explore key facets of cancer science and care. Students will also engage in faculty lectures, panel discussions, and participate in skill-building workshops to expand their knowledge, build professional networks, and support their future biomedical career paths. The program gives students an in-depth look at cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and scientific discovery.
The program encourages applications from students who are interested in understanding how cancer affects different areas in the United States. Applicants must be current sophomores or juniors attending a Michigan high school. We encourage applications from the full spectrum of talent that the Michigan has to offer.
PROGRAM DATES:
Monday through Friday, July 13 – 24, 2026; 9:30am -1pm.
A two-day on-campus orientation research bootcamp (lunch provided) will take place June 15 & 16 before the virtual sessions. Attendance is recommended but not required if circumstances/location prevent participation.
THE PROGRAM INCLUDES:
Meals provided during the optional on-campus orientation and research bootcamp
Two weeks of introductory virtual programming (July 13–24) featuring expert speakers and activity leaders across cancer care, cancer research, health disparities, and professional development
Opportunities to collaborate and participate in beginner-level research activities with peers from other institutions
Mentorship from oncology professionals
A $500 stipend for each student who completes the program
At home lab kits for research activities
Optional monthly enrichment activities during the academic year
PARTICIPATING INSTITUTIONS: The University of Michigan is pleased to enroll up to 20 SHE trainees. The UM cohort will complete all program activities in collaboration with peers enrolled through the University of Kentucky, University of Chicago, University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Texas at Austin.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Full-time Michigan high school student
Current sophomore or junior at the time of application
Strong interest in a career in scientific research or medicine
Ability to commit to two full weeks of virtual programming durinig the times above

If accepted, you will participate in a virtual classroom with students from across the country. Describe how you work in team settings or approach learning new skills in online or remote environments. How do you envision collaborating with peers on virtual projects, research activities, or discussions during this program?
Arrange for a teacher, coach, employer, or other appropriate individual to complete the online applicant recommendation form by 11:59 p.m. EST by Sunday, March 29, 2026 (They will be sent a link to complete, but you should reach out to confirm and follow up with them to ensure it is submitted.)
